Payroll Specialist

The O’Dwyer Group is vertically integrated, transport fleet services and temperature control solutions provider with over 50 years of combined expertise. The company is comprised of two transport temperature control divisions, a transport fleet services division, and a transport fleet leasing division. The divisions offer seamless acquisition, management, and scheduled maintenance of transport equipment for temperature sensitive, intermodal, and specialized freight applications and operate as an OEM parts distributor and equipment dealer.
The O’Dwyer Group is looking for an extremely detail-oriented individual who enjoys working within a fast-paced team environment as a Payroll Accounting Specialist. Reporting to the Controller and a dotted reporting line to the Vice President of Human Resource, the Payroll Accounting Specialist oversees all functions related to the delivery of compensation and corresponding payroll services in adherence with strict deadlines and in accordance with government legislation and Company policy and procedures.
Responsibilities:
As a Payroll Accounting Specialist, you will:
- Manage full-cycle payroll for hourly and salaried employees across multiple provinces, ensuring compliance with provincial and federal regulations.
- Process accurate and timely payroll payments through direct deposit, adhering to payroll deadlines.
- Enhance payroll processes and documentation, focusing on continuous improvement and best practices.
- Maintain detailed employee records, including personal information, tax withholdings, and banking details.
- Prepare and file statutory reports and remittances, such as T4/T4A, RL1, ROE, EI, CPP, WSIB, CNESST, and EHT, in compliance with CRA and provincial tax authorities.
- Conduct regular payroll audits and account reconciliations to identify and resolve discrepancies.
- Oversee year-end processes, including distribution of tax forms (T4, RL1) and preparation of year-end reconciliations.
- Manage vacation accruals and payouts, ensuring accuracy and compliance with company policies.
- Prepare and post payroll journal entries, including month-end and year-end accruals.
- Serve as the subject matter expert for Dayforce payroll and time tracking modules, providing training and support to managers and supervisors.
- Stay updated on payroll legislation and regulations, ensuring ongoing compliance.
Requirements:
To excel in this role, you should have:
- A Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, or a related field.
- Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) designation.
- 5-7 years of progressive payroll experience in a fast-paced environment, with a focus on payroll processing and compliance.
- Proficiency with Ceridian Dayforce payroll system.
- In-depth knowledge of Canadian federal and provincial payroll regulations, including those in Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland & Labrador.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in payroll processing and reconciliations.
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to train and support staff on payroll procedures.
- Exceptional organizational and time-management abilities, with the capacity to meet strict deadlines.
- High level of integrity and confidentiality, handling sensitive payroll information with discretion.
